How do I set up two-factor authentication (2FA) by entering a setup key manually?
If scanning a QR code isn’t possible, most services give you the option to enter a secret key manually. Saving this secret key in the Authenticator App allows it to generate your 2FA codes.
Follow these steps:
Go to your account settings:
Log in to the online service where you want to enable 2FA (such as Instagram, Facebook, or a crypto platform) and navigate to the Security or Account Settings section.Find the Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) option:
Look for the option to enable 2FA, which may also be labeled as Two-Step Verification (2SV) or Two-Step Authentication (2SA).Choose the Authenticator App method:
When prompted, select Authenticator App. A QR code will appear, but you should also see an option to copy or display a setup key (sometimes called a “secret key”).Enter the key manually in the Authenticator App:
Open your Authenticator App.
Tap the + (plus) icon and select the Manually option.
Type in the service's name (such as Instagram, Facebook, or a crypto platform) and your username.
Paste or type the secret key provided by the online service.
Tap Save.
Confirm the setup:
The Authenticator App will generate a code for you. Enter this code into the online service to confirm that 2FA is successfully set up.Save backup options:
Most services provide backup codes or recovery options in case you lose access to your Authenticator App. Store these safely!
Once enabled, the Authenticator App will generate time-based codes for signing in, keeping your account secure and accessible.
